Identity crisis

Hmmmm

Had an crisis of the Identity type today.

Was propped up with a nice stack of catalogues beside me. Steaming coffee and a biscuit. Flicking through, thoroughly enjoying myself... oh, some things on special here and there. Thinking to self, several variations of "mmm, self, I like that skirt... that is TOTALLY me...." ....

Absorbed....

Enjoying myself....

Along comes a kid....

teenager to be exact...

I say, hey, I really like this, and this, and this... what do you think???? Kid doesnt answer and so I look at its face.... bug eyed and incredulous.... umm, mum... I think you are a bit - old for those.... I am really really sorry mum!!!!!!!! (pleading now)

oh dear.

I looked again and then tried to picture in my minds eye how i would look....

oh shit

I have come to the point in my life where my mind is much much younger then my body. I cant get away with being a woman of 'indescriminate age' anymore..... damn

my type of fashion finally comes into fashion and i want to wear it and it would only make me look like mutton dressed up as lamb....

sigh

oh well... I guess i will go and get myself a polyester frock or something more appropriate....

I know how you feel.

The things I would love to wear I either don't have the confidence for - or am worried I'm not young enough for (notice I didn't say too old for - ha ha!).
It's a bit of a dilemma.
Then there are some that can wear anything and get away with it - why IS that?

Interesting dialogue (as I am in that same age group!). So...how does the teenager feel about us more "mature" people coloring our hair crazy colors? Can we not hang on to that lest shred of youthfulness? Hmmm..I see green, purple, and brilliant red highlights in my future!

There'd have to be a change to florals for me to play bowls: I look dreadful in white! It's not all that slimming, either....

I reckon that a whole flock of mutton might just work in our favour... you know, scare off the lamb..... & then I reckon we'd have our own fashion thing happening.....

You said the word yourself, Jen: "My kind of fashion..."... Just wear it. ;0)

Well, I absolutely enjoyed reading your blog/post, thank you for sharing!
My teenagers remind me, too often, that I dress 'odd/weird/different'.
My excuse...I'm an artist. Also, I teach wee ones, so I can get away with no being in style. As for dressing 'younger', well I sadly haven't been in style since I was pregnant with my 21 year old.
I say, just wear what makes you happy :) Cheers~

I know exactly what you mean! I am thinking of giving it all up and becoming a fat and sassy eccentric old lady. Maybe next year!

Hello Jen~ I found you through Natalie. Great Blog. I can actually picture myself doing the same thing! Dang, I really love some of the fashion out! My girls look so cute and I want to wear it but... better not!
gotta love our kids for being honest!

Audrey, I think that hair colour would be more acceptable, so I might just do it!!

Cyndy - black or purple would be my choice.. florals - not really me. And I have ran the more specific version of this story to a couple of friends and they were just as horrified as the kid. Must have just had a moment - quite embarrasing really - lol.

Bairbre - Artists are different - DEFINATELY!! You go girl! I just wish I had the courage when I was young to wear what wouldnt suit me now...does that make sense??

Kathleen - fat, sassy and eccentric - am going to run with that - love it :D

Janis - Thank you - yes, honest kids can be sooooo brutal at times - but it may just save us from doing something we would regret later!!

:)

Funny stuff! Just a few months ago I looked at myself in the mirror and realised I was dressing like an 'adult'!
